BYD Blade Battery Changing the EV Battery Landscape

byd blade battery

In the rapidly evolving world of electric vehicles, innovation and safety are paramount. One company that’s been making waves in the EV industry is BYD (Build Your Dreams), a leading Chinese manufacturer backed by Warren Buffett. With the surge in demand for EV batteries, BYD has emerged as a frontrunner, thanks in no small part to its groundbreaking Blade Battery. This article explores the intricacies of the BYD Blade Battery and why even Tesla may soon adopt this revolutionary technology.

The Blade Battery Revolution

The BYD Blade Battery, introduced in March 2020, has been a game-changer in the EV battery landscape. This innovative battery is the brainchild of FinDreams Battery, an independent subsidiary of BYD. The Blade Battery gets its name from its unique design, resembling a blade with positive and negative terminals on each end. Each “Blade” measures 37.8 inches in length, 3.5 inches in height, and a mere 0.53 inches in width. These individual cells are configured in an array, enclosed within a battery pack, maximizing space utilization by over 50% compared to conventional cylindrical lithium-ion phosphate batteries.

Enhanced Performance and Safety

One of the primary concerns with EVs is battery safety, especially during accidents. Traditional lithium-ion batteries have been prone to overheating and combustion. However, the Blade Battery boasts several safety features, starting with its use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for the cathode material. LFP chemistry offers superior stability, even at temperatures as high as 930 °F (500 °C), making it significantly safer than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

The Blade Battery has also passed industry-standard tests, including the “Everest” test, where a nail puncture is used to check the battery’s resistance to ignition during an internal short circuit. Unlike other batteries that charred or exploded during this test, the BYD Blade Battery remained cool at 30-60 °C (85-140 °F), demonstrating its exceptional heat management.

Remarkably, the Blade Battery withstood extreme tests like overcharging by 260% and exposure to high temperatures up to 300 °C (572° F) without any deformation, leakage, or damage. This level of robustness positions BYD’s battery as one of the safest in the market.

Safety Concerns with BYD Blade Batteries

While the BYD Blade Battery appears to be one of the safest options available, it is not without its concerns. Reports of 11 fires in BYD vehicles have surfaced between 2020 and 2022, with most incidents involving the BYD Han. The exact cause of these fires remains unknown, although BYD has attributed one incident to the use of a non-approved coolant during a crash test.

It is important to note that these incidents primarily occurred in China, and no such incidents have been reported in Australia. In fact, the popular model BYD Atto 3 has received a 5-star ANCAP safety rating for Australian-supplied standard range and extended range models built from November 21, 2022.

Tesla’s Adoption of BYD Blade Batteries

Tesla, a global leader in EV manufacturing, has also taken note of the BYD Blade Battery’s potential. Notably, Tesla has started using BYD Blade Batteries for its Tesla Y cars produced in the Berlin Gigafactory. While the usage of Blade Batteries has been limited to this facility for now, it is highly likely that Tesla will expand their application to other Gigafactories.

Furthermore, there are rumours that Tesla plans to utilize a new type of Blade Battery for its upcoming Model 2, an affordable and compact EV with a target price below $25,000. This move signifies Tesla’s recognition of the cost-effectiveness and safety of BYD’s innovative battery technology.

Conclusion

The BYD Blade Battery has undoubtedly revolutionized the EV battery landscape, setting new standards for safety and performance. Its innovative design, use of lithium iron phosphate chemistry, and impressive resilience in extreme tests make it a frontrunner in the quest for safer and more efficient EV batteries.

While concerns regarding isolated fire incidents in BYD vehicles exist, further testing and experience will be necessary to draw comprehensive conclusions. With Tesla already incorporating Blade Batteries into its production lineup, the adoption of this technology by other major automakers could reshape the future of electric vehicles, making them both safer and more affordable for consumers worldwide. As the electric vehicle industry continues to evolve, it’s clear that the BYD Blade Battery is a significant player in the ongoing transformation.
