How to properly calculate the time to charge an EV?
To properly calculate the time it will take to charge an electric vehicle (EV), you will need to consider the following factors:
- Battery Size: The larger the battery, the longer it will take to charge the EV.
- Charging Speed: The faster the charging speed, the less time it takes to charge. Charging speed is usually expressed in kW. (kilowatts).
- Charging Station: The charging station you use can also impact charging time. A Level 2 charging station, commonly found at public charging stations, has a charging speed of 3-6 kW and can charge an electric vehicle in 4-8 hours. A Level 3 charging station, also known as a DC fast charger, can charge an EV in 30 minutes to an hour and has a charging speed of 50 kW or higher. You can use the following formula to calculate the distance an EV can travel based on its battery size and charging time:
Distance (kilometres) = (Battery size (kWh) / Consumption (kWh/kilometre)
For example, if your EV has a battery capacity of 60 kWh and a consumption rate of 0.3 kWh/km, the distance the EV can travel is:
Distance (kilometres) = (60 kWh / 0.3 kWh/kilometer) = 200 km
You can use the following formula to calculate how long it will take to charge an EV:
Charging time (hours) = (Battery capacity (kWh) / Charging rate (kW))
For example, if you have a 60 kWh battery and use a Level 2 charging station with a charging speed of 3 kW, the charging time is:
(60 kWh / 3 kW) = 20 hours of charging time

There are several factors that can affect the range and charging time of an electric vehicle (EV):
Driving habits

As EV battery ages, its capacity decreases, resulting in a shorter range.
Terrain
Driving on hilly terrain or in extreme weather conditions can reduce an EV's range.
Temperature
Extreme temperatures can also impact an EV's range and charging time. Cold temperatures can reduce an EV's range, while hot temperatures can lengthen charging time.
