Best Charging Practice

ev home charging

As the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow, it’s essential to consider the best EV charging practices to optimize your charging sessions and ensure the longevity of your EV battery. Following these best practices can save money, reduce your carbon footprint, and enjoy hassle-free EV ownership.

Optimizing Your EV Charging Session

When optimizing your EV charging session, several key factors must be considered. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

How to Charge Your EV?

The charging process for your EV is straightforward, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure optimal performance. If your charging unit is untethered, you must connect the suitable charging cable to the charging unit and then connect the alternate end to the electric vehicle. However, it’s essential to practice optimal cable management, ensuring that cables are well taken care of and remain untwisted, unknotted, and unbent throughout the duration of charging.

Once your charging session is complete, it’s important to pack away charging cables safely and securely. For tethered charging, store charging unit cables by lifting them off the ground onto a cable reel, and store untethered charging units in a cable bag or reel.

Battery Care

The battery is an essential component of your EV, and proper battery care is critical for optimal performance. Ideally, your battery should always remain between 20 – 80% charged. If you plan on leaving your EV parked for an extended period, setting the charge rate at 50% is ideal for preventing overcharging while you’re away.

Short, daily charging sessions are better for the longevity of your EV battery than longer, weekly sessions. We recommend limiting DC Fast and Ultra-fast chargers as the primary method of charging your EV. Research has shown that their use can negatively impact the longevity and durability of the EV battery. We strongly recommend home EV charging as the primary EV charging solution. When to Charge Your EV

Although charging your EV at any time during the day or night is possible, charging at off-peak hours is advisable for cost efficiency. This allows you to use low off-peak electricity rates and save money on energy bills. If you have a solar-optimised charging unit, charging during peak solar generation times (usually between 10 am – 4 pm) is also a sensible option to use incoming solar energy.
