Intro
The newest auto manufacturer to emerge in Australia is on a mission to make electric vehicles more affordable, and it has set its sights on Tesla as its primary competitor. In spite of its unusual name, the BYD Atto 3 is a mid-sized electric SUV that early adopters predict will be the next big thing. Taking a left-hand drive prototype for a short suburban drive reveals that the Atto 3 has the potential to garner a significant fanbase.
What Makes It Stand Out?
A gently sloping roofline, small LED headlights, and aerodynamic wheels distinguish the Atto 3’s exterior appearance, which is based on BYD’s current Dragon Face 3.0 design language. A whimsical fitness and musical inspired concept are carried through to the inside of the Chinese-built EV. This includes red strings on the door cards that are meant to resemble guitar strings, dumbbell-shaped air vents, and a two-tone blue and white interior as standard.
Performance
In contrast to other front-wheel-drive EVs with comparable power outputs, the 150kW/310Nm electric motor feels sprightly right out of the gate owing to computer intervention. BYD claims a 0-100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds. According to the cautious WLTP standard, the Atto 3 has a 320-kilometer (km) range whereas the extended-range Atto 3 has 420-kilometer (km) range.
MSRP
Starting at $44,381 before taxes and fees, it is the most affordable all-electric SUV in Australia. It has a longer range, a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment system, and a lot of safety features as standard.
